Melbourne PURE Case Studies - Social Inclusion Theme

Melbourne PURE has undertaken a series of case studies of regionally-significant initiatives in which higher education institutions (HEIs) have been engaged. The purpose of the case studies has been to understand better the conditions and the factors which shape effective engagement by HEIs with key stakeholders in the Melbourne region. Each case study has been chosen because it contributes to a larger theme which has been identified as a key priority for Melbourne: regional innovation systems; ‘green’ jobs’; and social inclusion and active citizenship.

Värmland - the PURE report 'will make it easier for us to keep the speed up'

Board member Professor Steve Garlick was in Sweden last week to disseminate the PURE report for Värmland (see below) at the cluster conference organised by Staffan Bjurulf, Project Manager for the region. Anders Olsson, Enterprise and Innovation Manager for Värmland,  reports that the region has continued the discussion on how to tackle work on a strategy to develop the region's human capabilities.

PASCAL sends its sympathies to the people of the PURE region of Darling Downs

PASCAL sends its sympathies to the people of the PURE region of Darling Downs and particularly the people of Toowoomba, which has suffered terrible flooding and loss of life. The attached pictures and link to a youtube video sent by PASCAL Associate, Professor Glen Postle, give you some idea of the devastation caused. We hope that the worst is over and our thoughts are with our friends and colleagues.

The video is of Chalk Drive, Toowoomba, taken from across the road from the Flexi School. You can see the school in some of the shots (click on an image to view/show slideshow).

Mobilizing Adaptive Engagement: From Disequilibrium to Innovation Paul T. Crawford and Diana L. Robinson

This presentation demonstrates community engagement skills drawn from literature and practices associated with adaptive leadership. The practice of community engagement frequently reveals adaptive challenges that resist easy resolution.  Adaptive challenges occur when formerly predictable environments are altered and prompt people and organizations to change.

PURE Interim Synthesis Report

This report has two purposes. The first is to inform participants at the PASCAL Conference in Gaborone on 30 November - 2 December about PURE. The second is to provide regions taking part in the PURE project with a summary of common findings, issues and advice.

National government, and increasingly intergovernmental bodies like the European Union and Commission, influence what engagement can take place in local regions. This report is however addressed to two main parties, regional administrations and their communities, and higher education institutions.
