PASCAL engaged to measure and assess the community engagement needs for Darling Downs and south-west Queensland

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Professor Bill Lovegrove today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Regional Development Australia (RDA), to consider how collaborative partnerships can build on the long-term future for the Darling Downs and south-west Queensland.

The Bradley Review in Australia recommended: 'That the Australian Government commission a study to examine the feasibility of a new national university for regional areas and, if the study indicates that a new national regional university is feasible, the Australian Government provide appropriate funding for its establishment and operation'. (Recommendation 17)

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC): The Impact of Higher Education Institutions on Regional Economies 2005/06

This report of an ESRC Network on cross-regional perspectives on the transformative impact of higher education on disadvantaged groups and communities was produced in 2006, and involved PASCAL (Mike Osborne and Lesley Doyle) as well as colleagues at the Open University, the University of Salford and the University of East London. It will be of interest as a backdrop to our work within the PURE and PUMR projects.

Australian Minister refutes pessimistic regional investment report - Crean vs Grattan Institute

Minister for Regional Australia, Simon Crean, said that a report released by the Grattan Institute talks down the benefits of regional investment and does not recognise challenges and circumstances facing people in the regions.

Regional Development and Higher Education - the Next Decade

What have universities and other institutions of higher education (HEIs) contributed to the development of regions, in Europe and worldwide, in recent times? What may we expect of the HEIs, and about the development of regions, during the current decade? This follows the global financial crisis – the GFC - in a context of continuing ecological stress and continuing environmental degradation. What part do leading intergovernmental organisations play in all of this – and how about relations between Europe and other parts of a rapidly changing world?
