Preparatory meeting for the first UNESCO Global Learning Cities Conference The Preparatory meeting for the first UNESCO Global Learning Cities conference was held in Beijing on 1st December by UNESCO's Institute for Lifelong Learning, together with the National Commission of China for UNESCO of the Ministry of Education China, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission the Chinese and many other national and international organisations.

PASCAL was represented by its Co-director, Professor Michael Osborne. The conference will be held in November 2013 in Beijing.

Lectureship in Adult Education - University of Glasgow

The Cape Town Statement of 2001 on the Characteristic Elements of a Lifelong Learning Higher Education Institution

I was reminded of the Cape Town statement recently by Jin Yang of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg. It was developed at the conference on Lifelong Learning, Higher Education and Active Citizenship held from the 10 - 12 October 2000 in Cape Town, co-hosted by University of Western Cape, the UNESCO Institute for Education and the Adult Education Research Group of the Danish National University of Education. I attach it here for us to reflect on how in the past decade universities have progressed in relation to the criteria laid out in the statement.

Attached is the SIRUS report, Engaging in Lifelong Learning: Shaping Inclusive and Responsive University Strategies, by Hanne Smidt  and Andrée Sursock, which is based on material prepared by representatives of the 29 participating European universities.  It is based on a study of the institutional lifelong learning strategies of these universities by the European Universities Association, who suggest that frank and open discussions provided invaluable insights into strategic institutional development.

eThekwini - a Learning City in South Africa

I spotted some time after the event that the eThekwini Municipality, which incorporates the city of Durban, in South Africa is positioning itself as a learning city with the launch of the Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) in December 2010.

This initiative, which is reported as a first in the history of local government on the continent, aims to enhance the capacity and knowledge of local government practitioners in Africa in order to be effective in the delivery of core competencies.

Public perceptions of Australian Universities - announcement from Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance

Universities Australia recently commissioned consultants to undertake a major study on the public perceptions of Australian Universities. In this request,  the consultants are seeking to ensure they have access to the most relevant literature to inform their work.  Please support this work in any way you are able, in particular by providing the Consultants as soon as possible with any relevant literature and/or studies you are aware of or think will assist their work.

PURE project extension agreement in Darling Downs/Professor Glen Postle

Following a memorandum of understanding between the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and Regional Development Australia (RDA), PASCAL will be extending its PURE work in the Darling Downs region of Australia.

One of the architects of this memorandum has been PASCAL Associate, Professor Glen Postle, pictured below with the Vice-Chancellor of USQ, Professor Bill Lovegrove and others from USQ an RDA.
