Glen Postle receives the Miller-Grassie Award for Outstanding Leadership in Education.

It is good to see that some of the work that was featured in the PURE case-study of Darling Downs continues, and that a key colleague there, PASCAL Associate, Glen Postle has received the Miller-Grassie Award for Outstanding Leadership in Education.

Innovation in Higher Education in Europe - a new report with PASCAL inputs

The final report and annexes of case studies from a Study on Innovation in Higher Education undertaken for the European Union in 2013 led by LSE Enterprise and the Panteia Group have just been published. PASCAL undertook two of the case studies within this study, which are found in the annex as follows:

U21 workshop in Hong Kong - 21 November

The lastest workshop of the U21 RUR network on the topic of Research Universities and their Learning Cities was held at Hong Kong University on 21 November 2013, and hosted by Professor Mark Bray. Delegates attended from the University of Glasgow, Hong Kong University and UBC as well as collaborating universities and cities who are not part of U21. These included the University of Catania, the cities of Cork and Helsinki, Simon Fraser University and the University of Tampere. 

At this point some practical suggestions that emerged from discussion include the following:

PIAAC events in Barcelona and Edinburgh

We are delighted to announce that PASCAL will be collaborating with the  Jaume Bofill Foundation in Barcelona in organising two events concerned with the recent OECD PIAAC study.

What is the Value of UNESCO to the UK?

Organisations in the UK benefit by generating £90 million per year through the UK's membership of UNESCO. These finances, which include investment, tourism revenue and project grants, have contributed to regeneration, community development and conservation across the UK.

Given our excellent relationship in Pascal with UNESCO's Institute for Lifelong Learning, subscribers will be interested in this report.

RUR Workshop - HKU Learning Space, 21 November 2013

This is an early alert to the fact that U21's Research Universities and their Regions (RUR) group will be arranging a workshop at Hong Kong University on Thursday 21 November 2013, kindly hosted by Dorothy Cheung and colleagues at the HKU Learning Space.

Gauteng City-Region Observatory

Having been in South Africa last week I was alerted to the Gauteng City-Region Observatory, and was pleased to see that it includes amongst its work a project on Transformation in Higher Education, which examines of ''how the concept of a ‘learning region’ may be applied to the Gauteng City-Region (GCR), through the institutional vehicle of the region’s higher education institutions''. Formal Launch of the UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education

I was delighted to have been invited to the Formal Launch of the UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education at the University of Victoria on 4 March. This event took place in the Ceremonial Hall of First People's House at the University of Victoria.

PASCAL & CAAC – A Meeting of Minds

During the PASCAL 2012 Conference in October in Brest, Brittany, France delegates to the Conference, including PASCAL Chair Josef Konvitz, met with representatives of the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities (CAAC). By simple coincidence the CAAC was in Brest at the same time as PASCAL for their annual conference! A meeting was arranged between Alan Foster, PASCAL Executive Officer, and Tamara Guirao-Espiñeira, CAAC Co-ordinator, in order to explore issues of common interest.
