Transforming Cities and Minds Through the Scholarship of Engagement: Economy, Equity and Environment

The Talloires Network Secretariat is pleased to announce the release of a new book, entitled Transforming Cities and Minds Through the Scholarship of Engagement: Economy, Equity and Environment, edited by its Director of Programs and Research, Dr. Lorlene Hoyt.

To launch the book's release, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Community Innovators Lab (M.I.T. CoLab), the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE), and the Talloires Network are co-sponsoring an interactive webinar to be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 3:30 – 5:00 pm EST. If you would like to participate in the conversation, please register by clicking on the link provided below. If you are interested but unable to participate at this time, kindly note that the webinar will be recorded and you may access the presentation at your convenience.

The presenters, Dr. Lorlene Hoyt, and two of her former students, Gayle Christiansen and Eric Mackres, will discuss their work in the M.I.T. Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The three of them, along with 4 other graduate students, led an experiment aimed at modernizing the university's thesis requirement. Called "the collaborative thesis project," together they engaged with civic leaders and residents in six American cities to critically examine novel strategies for addressing interlocking issues of economy, equity and environment. Participating students have shared their research activities and findings by way of blog posts, newspaper and magazine articles, radio shows, public presentations, short films and how-to guides. Each student also authored a chapter in the book.
