Our close colleague in the Big Tent, the President of PRIA, Dr Rajesh Tandon, will be giving the 2013 Paz and Knute Buttedhal Lecture on Learning Democracy in Everyday Life: Reflections on International Women's Day on Friday 8 March from 18:30 to 21:00 in Room 110, West Mall Annex, UBC.

Around the world, democracy as a form of governance has gained ascendancy in the past two decades; yet, around the world, intolerance towards diversity of opinions and plurality of perspectives has also been increasing. Democracy in everyday life is learnt through daily struggles in life. A central aspect of this learning to accept gender relations on the premise of ‘different yet equal’. There is so much to learn from women’s movements, campaigns for gender justice and everyday practices of women.

Dr Rajesh Tandon is co-director of UNESCO Chair on Community-based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education. Dr Tandon is co-editor of the forthcoming GUNI Report on “Engagement, Knowledge & Higher Education: Rethinking Social Responsibility” (2013) and co-founder & President of Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), New Delhi. Over the past 30 years, under his leadership, PRIA has been working towards the empowerment of the poor and marginalized such that they can collectively claim their rights and organize for self-reliant development. He is a pioneer in innovative methodologies in participatory research, participatory planning, monitoring & evaluation.
Where: Room 110, West Mall Annex, UBC
