Update from the Chair: President Mark Gearan

On International Women’s Day, the Talloires Network and Association of Commonwealth Universities joined forces in Colombo, Sri Lanka, at a conference designed to explore issues in higher education from a gendered perspective. The conference – Critical Women: Women as Agents of Change through Higher Education– focused on three themes: Leadership, Economic Development and Research. Our co-sponsored plenary session, Universities Engaging with Gender Issues in Their Societies, examined the ways in which universities can address inequalities and injustices pertaining to women by way of civic engagement. Dr. Lorlene Hoyt, Director of Programs and Research for the Talloires Network, had the honor of moderating our esteemed panel, which included three exemplary Vice-Chancellors: Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Shahabudin of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Dr. Samina Qadir of Fatima Jinnah Women University in Pakistan, and Dr. Janet Beer of Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our panelists for their participation and to draw your attention to the essay and photographs in this issue of the newsletter highlighting the issues our panelists raised and discussed. Hong Kong Polytechnic University makes service-learning compulsory

With the implementation of the four-year curriculum starting September 2012, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) will introduce a credit-bearing “service-learning” requirement in the curriculum. "PolyU Serves" will enable all undergraduate students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired from their studies to serve the community. Congratulations to PolyU for its “PolyUServes” Community Service Campaign which is one of the most important initiatives commemorating the University’s 75th anniversary. When the service-learning structure is fully implemented, PolyU will have around 3,000 students participating in 70 projects annually. Learn more>>

Universities Engaging with Gender Issues in Their Societies

At an ACU Conference in Sri Lanka on International Women’s Day, the Talloires Network and Association of Commonwealth Universities co-sponsored a plenary session entitled Universities Engaging with Gender Issues in Their Societies at a conference focused on women as agents of change in higher education. Grounded in such beliefs that universities should reflect and represent their societies and access the entirety of their human resource potential, the conference connected leaders in the Commonwealth for the purpose of developing strategies to increase both the quantity and quality of women leaders in higher education institutions. Understanding Service-Learning and Community Engagement: Crossing Boundaries Through Research, edited by Julie A. Hatcher & Robert G. Bringle, 2012.

Chapters in this volume are based on presentations given at the 2010 annual conference of the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement held in Indianapolis, IN. The conference theme "International Perspectives: Crossing Boundaries through Research" was chosen to highlight ways in which research crosses all kinds of boundaries: disciplinary boundaries, cultural boundaries, and national boundaries. Although service-learning is valued as an active learning strategy across the globe, little is known about the ways that service-learning is similar or different in varied contexts. Understanding service-learning and community engagement from cross-cultural and crossdisciplinary perspectives will improve both research and practice. Learn more>>

AsiaEngage Inaugural conference, “Higher-Education-Industry-Community Engagement: Forging Meaningful Partnerships across Asia.” Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 7-9 May 2012.

The conference will bring together stakeholders from universities, industry, communities and governments to provide the necessary impetus at the regional level to develop a critical agenda that fits in with regional realities, interests and priorities towards achieving better university-industry-community engagement in Asia. The Talloires Network is co-sponsoring this conference, and Talloires Steering Committee Vice-Chair Jan Reid will speak and represent the network at the launch of AsiaEngage. Learn more>>

5th Living Knowledge Conference. “Re-imagining Research Relationships – Co-creating Knowledge in a Democratic Society.” Bonn, Germany. 8-12 May 2009.

The conference will set its focus on different themes to get more insight in processes, and develop specific policy recommendations that resonate with public concerns and articulated research needs and built on the experience and know-how of the previous Living Knowledge conferences. It will be an opportunity to bring together key thinkers and practitioners in the area of community based research, university/community partnerships and Science Shops and aims at providing options and opportunities for collaborations and ensuring that this area of work is prioritised on policy agendas both nationally and internationally. Academy for Community and Civic Engagement. Auburn University, USA. 14-16 May 2012.

The Community and Civic Engagement Initiative at Auburn University has announced the first annual Academy for Community and Civic Engagement (ACCE) for faculty throughout the American southeast in the arts and humanities who are interested in incorporating civic engagement/service learning practices into their courses, outreach scholarship, and Promotion & Tenure policies. ACCE will provide an intense 3-day workshop for successful applicants.
