Random Reflections by Dr. Rajesh Tandon – November 2015

Here is another round of random reflections for your perusal:

1. Photos of graduating class of MBAs in one of the prestigious Institutes of Management show women students in formal western wear--skirts and pants. A newspaper advertisement of talented youngsters getting a prestigious scholarship shows all women in similar western dress. Are we equating competent, modern, professional and winning performances with western attire for girls and women? When my kids were graduating from Woodstock, all girls wore saris. Let there be diversity in dress, no one type is superior to other?
2. Marathon running is both sport and entertainment. More than 50,000 people from nearly 50 countries ran New York marathon this weekend. Runners were from all age groups and colours. There were more women runners than men. Thousands of spectators cheered along the way. Beautiful and entertaining posters were put up by spectators. Music bands were performing every kilometre. The sense of solidarity and hope was floating in the air. Now, there are nearly 100 cities where marathons are organised as a spectacle.
3. The teachings of Acharya Tulsi, a Jain saint and scholar, have been much focused on peace, non-violence and education of girls. The Jain Vishwa Bharti University in Ladnun (Rajasthan) is a manifestation of his teachings and practice. An important aspect of this phenomenon is that progressive spiritual leaders have always emphasised girls learning and education. Yet, in a country of multiple religious and spiritual Gurus, education of girls and women continues to be neglected.
4. The long process of electing an American President is under way.  Debates and speeches are being made. Every potential candidate is trying to grab attention of voters, or even supporters. How can American voters really care about all this campaign now, when actual election will take place a year from now? So, perhaps the current drama is for catching attention of funders for future campaign? Presidential elections are expensive in USA; why, elections in India are expensive today; look at money being spent in Bihar elections, just one state of the country. Is the modern manifestation of 'equality of vote' under democracy?
5. The business of coaching classes for entering higher education is flourishing in Rajasthan. After Kota, Sikar and Jhunjhunu are developing as coaching centres of the country. Expenses in coaching are much higher than actual professional education. It is far more profitable to run coaching classes than colleges and universities. And, the market is endless in a country like India. Now, preaparatory coaching for entrance to engineering college begins from Grade 8 (age 13 yrs). God bless such learning!
